Knowing Your Parents’ Finances

I’ve been spending a lot of time lately working at Panera Bread. Despite the traffic and noise there, it’s easier to get things done there than at the house, where my office isn’t completely set up yet. If you’ve ever faced the challenge of having to work from home, I’m sure you know how tough it can be. Even when I was single, I had to have a designated room just for work so that I could get things done.

The other day I overheard a guy at the table next to me talking on the phone to him mom about his pending wedding. He and his fiance were already having money disputes. His side of it was that she was not used to paying her own way (daddy’s princess), and that he payed for everything himself. They also had not yet talked about how they would handle finances in their house. He was asking his mom how she and his dad handled finances. Did they have separate checking accounts? Who paid the bills?

I think it’s pretty common for newlyweds to not have their financial arrangements in order. I think it’s a big mistake, but I think it’s pretty common. But is it odd to know about one’s parents’ finances? Personally, I know nothing about my parents finances and never have. I don’t even want to know.

So what is your situation? How much do you know about your parents’ finances?
